King of Hearts

Artist Statement: from the creator of Reimagining King of Hearts, Niloo Jalilvand

In this reimagined telling of King of Hearts, I invite you into a narrative woven through layers of personal and cinematic history.

This project is more than a reinterpretation of a 1968 Iranian melodrama, it is also a return to one of the most beloved popular films of pre-revolutionary Iranian cinema. Soltane Ghalbha (literally, King of Hearts) became iconic, a musical with an original score by Anoushiravan Rohani and singing voices by Aref and Ahdieh.

At the heart of the story is a young couple who marry in secret, without the permission of the woman’s wealthy father. Because he disapproves of the match, he disowns his daughter, which leaves the couple vulnerable. An accident then separates them for years, each believing the other has died. The man rises to fame as a singer, and raises their daughter alone. Many years later he meets the girl without knowing she is his own child, treats her mother, and on the night he intends to marry a wealthy woman, the truth is revealed. Husband, wife, and child are reunited, and the first love is restored. This pattern of secrecy, class tension, and late reconciliation spoke to 1960s audiences who were negotiating modernity, family authority, and the promises of popular culture.

This project is, for me, a journey into my own past and a tribute to the voices that were never fully heard. My father, a renowned dubbing actor, gave voice to the original film. As a child, I witnessed the world of Iranian cinema from the sidelines, a world that, while magical, also carried a toxic undercurrent, especially for women. Soon after, I was sent to boarding school in England at the age of ten, carrying with me a bundle of childhood impressions, half-understood tensions, and a longing for belonging.

This performance is personal. It is a space where I confront and reimagine those early memories, and where we give new voice to the women whose strength was often misunderstood. Characters like Fetneh, long portrayed as rivals, are reframed with empathy and depth. Women like Azar Shiva, often labeled “difficult,” are revealed as boundary-setting artists navigating a male-dominated industry.

To make these hidden truths visible, we have chosen to layer languages and identities. Saeed and Setareh speak in Farsi with English subtitles, which keeps the cultural texture of the original film. When the reenactment breaks and we see the actors rather than the characters, they speak in English, so the audience can meet them as working artists with lived histories, not only as fictional roles.

Ultimately, this reimagining is about giving voice to those who have been left out of the frame, not only in the film, but in our collective memory. It is a story within a story, a conversation between generations, a space where performance becomes healing and memory becomes movement.

SCENE 1

Saeed:

Riding in a car, a ride, a ride, it is lovely on one condition, that you, like me, take wing, that you suddenly show up before your darling, restless to see her. That you kiss her face, that you laugh, that you speak with her of sorrows, that you tell her of love and longing. Nothing in this world is sweeter than love and dreaming.

Setareh:

From a flower’s petal I will make paper, I will craft a tender letter, I will write of my love, my secret, saying, O my new blossom, after greetings, O my heart’s desire, First, I love you very much; second, my eyes wait on your road, over field and plain.

Setareh:

At the end I ask God to keep you for me, I want you with all my love, I love you, I love you.

Saeed (singing)

Setareh (singing)

Saeed (singing)

Setareh (singing)

SCENE 2

Saeed:

Don’t bother. She’s right here!

Setareh:

Eh, Saeed, it’s you?! I thought I was dreaming…

Saeed:

No, my love, you’re not dreaming. It’s really me… I missed you so much, I couldn’t wait to see you. The whole way here, I didn’t even realize how I got here! I almost crashed a few times!

Setareh:

I wish you could always be here, right here… away from everyone… it feels like the world belongs only to us.

Saeed:

Yeah, I wish it could stay that way. You and me, alone in this beautiful park… just imagine! Our kids are playing under these trees… But will they ever let us? It’s always about money, about what people say… your father, my mother…

Setareh:

Saeed, I have to tell you something—but I’m afraid it’ll ruin this beautiful moment! Promise you won’t get angry?

Saeed:

What happened?!

Setareh:

No, you have to promise first!

Saeed:

Alright, I promise, my love. I’d do anything for you.

Setareh:

The truth is… my father wants to marry me off to a rich man… to take me away from here.

Saeed:
What did you say?! Marry you off?! That father of yours finally showed his poison! Setareh, you don’t really know these people. Your father just doesn’t like me—money is just an excuse. He just wants you somewhere I can’t reach you.

Setareh: Money isn’t everything… I want you, not a big house empty of love.

Saeed: My mom’s the same way—insisting I have to marry “Fetneh”! She says she’s rich, she’ll support me, help me become famous… a singer.

Setareh:

Then what about us? What happens to our dream? That stage, that concert… do you remember?

Saeed:

Hey hey hey, our dream! Just imagine—we become professional singers, standing on stage together, singing side by side, people clapping for us… if only… but dreams always seem one step ahead of us.

Setareh:

I’m scared… scared of being alone, of fighting our families… but most of all, of losing you.

Saeed:

Don’t be afraid, Setareh… as long as I’m here, you have nothing to fear. If I have to, I’ll stand up to everyone who doesn’t want us to be together.  You know… if there was a way no one could ever stop us… that would be perfect.
We could quietly go to the registrar’s office today. Get married. Then they’d all have to accept it.

Setareh:

Are you serious? You mean… husband and wife?

Saeed:

Setareh! Will you marry me?

Setareh: Yes. A thousand times, yes. Just… don’t let go of my hand.

Saeed:

“I won’t let go… not even if the world wants me to.”

SCENE 3

The Comb

Upon your tresses, my dear, do not run the comb so often,
For within their curls and waves my heart has made its home.
For within their curls and waves my heart has made its home.

Loosen a few knots from your hair, O moon-faced one,
Perhaps then you may untie a knot from this mad heart of mine.
Perhaps then you may untie a knot from this mad heart of mine.

My heart has built its home within your hair,
And each time you comb it, the poor thing bleeds anew.
And each time you comb it, the poor thing bleeds anew.

Upon your tresses, my dear, do not run the comb so often,
For within their curls and waves my heart has made its home.
For within their curls and waves my heart has made its home.

In the ringlets of your hair, so many hearts are captive,
I see them, each heart bleeding beneath every tooth of your comb.
I see them, each heart bleeding beneath every tooth of your comb.

My heart has built its home within your hair,
And each time you comb it, the poor thing bleeds anew.
And each time you comb it, the poor thing bleeds anew.

And each time you comb your hair, my poor heart bleeds anew.
And each time you comb your hair, my poor heart bleeds anew.

Only in Iran

Only in Iran, only in Iran,
Oh wow, how hot it gets,
That blazing summer sun!
You go off to the seaside,
Forgetting all about me,
In Tehran’s heat—ah, how sweet!

Only in Iran, only in Iran,
How nice it feels,
That gentle winter sun!
You’re warm beneath the korsi,
And never even ask me
About the cold of Shemroon—ah, how sweet!

Iran’s autumn is beautiful,
Its trees all dressed in color,
Everywhere you go is a wonderland.

Its spring is full of joy,
By those green meadows,
That make you wish your love were by your side.

But you—my joyful spring,
You—my autumn rain,
You just love to tease with all your playful charm.

My winter’s glowing coal,
My summer’s icy water,
It’s you, and only you, in all of Iran.

SCENE 4

Father of Setareh:
My daughter, I have good news for you. One of my good friends has asked for your hand for his son. His son is very successful and wealthy. This will be very good for your future.

Setareh:
Father, I do not want that. I love someone else.

Father:
Do not talk back. Unless you walk over my dead body, you will only marry the one I say.

Setareh:
I am married, Dad. Saeed and I got married.

Father:

Shut up, you ungrateful girl. You are no longer my daughter. Get out of my house. I disown you, and you may never set foot in this house again.

Father of Setareh- Rasul

Setareh

Father

Setareh

Father

SCENE 5

Saeed:
Hi, Mom! Guess what! Come on, try to guess what news I’ve got for you!

Mother
Hello, my son… why are you so happy?

Saeed:
It finally happened, Mom… we got married today. Setareh and I. I just wanted to come tell you myself—before anyone else. I’m so happy…

Mother:
Saeed… listen to me, my son…

Saeed
What’s wrong? Are you upset I didn’t tell you sooner? I wanted to surprise you… come on, smile!

Mother:
No, it’s just… I wanted to tell you something…

Saeed:
What do you mean, Mom? Just say it—you’re scaring me!

Mother:

(Saeed takes the newspaper. He looks at it for a moment. The smile fades from his face.)

Saeed:
(voice trembling) This… no… this can’t be true…

Mother:
She had a car accident this morning… on the road to Shiraz…

Saeed:
She wanted to pick it herself… she said to wait until then…. Where are you?... Where are you, Setareh?... (weeping)

SCENE 6

Lala lala lala lala lala lullaby, life is but a mirage

Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby — life is a mirage

Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby — my fortune lies asleep

With all these tears and blood, what can I do with a fate so doomed?

In these dark days, in this wasted life, what can I say to you?

This child, untouched by sorrow, this little bird born of grief,

If she asks me where her father is — oh God, what shall I say?

Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby — the nest is cold

Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby — my heart is full of pain

I wander blind through the nights, searching for tomorrow

With these sightless eyes, I weep for my blind destiny

If I could find my way to You, God, I’d ask what curse You’ve given me

Where can I take all this sorrow — are You not the cruel one?

My body, oh God, has turned to ice; You’ve left me alone with my grief

This child, untouched by sorrow, this little bird born of grief,

If she asks me where her father is — oh God, what shall I say?

SCENE 7

Saeed:

Go. I do not want to see anyone.

Fetneh:

I am not “anyone,” Saeed. It is me, the same old Fetneh.

Saeed:

Fetneh, why did you come? Did I not tell you to leave me alone?

Fetneh: A person fills their loneliness with a warm breath, not with an empty bottle. Setareh left, yes, but the world did not end, Saeed. You still have a voice, you can still make everyone fall in love with you.

Saeed:

What good is that voice now, when there is no one to listen to me?

Fetneh:

You are wrong. A thousand people are waiting to hear you. You just have to get up. Sing, sing so everyone knows Saeed is still alive, he is still the king of hearts.

Fetneh:

I will stay by your side. I want to see how you shine again. Wealth, fame, the lights of the stage, all of it is waiting for you. You just have to let go of the sorrow.

Saeed:

Fetneh, I cannot. I can still hear that voice in my head, Setareh’s voice.

Fetneh:

Then let my voice take its place tonight. Saeed, life has to go on. Your voice is a gift. Let the world hear it. You just have to sing.

Saeed:
After Setareh, nothing means anything to me anymore.

Fetneh:

I am with you. Trust me. You will become famous, you will become wealthy, and you will find love again. Saeed… life must go on. Your voice is a gift. Let the world hear it. You must sing.

SCENE 9

Saeed:

Dear God… am I dreaming? Could it be? My God… you? It can’t be…

Setareh:

You’re alive? Am I dreaming…?

Saeed:

Setareh… you’re alive? I must be dreaming…

Setareh:

This is your daughter… Aftab (Sunshine).
